Crochet needle nr. 3 or 4 for the scrappy yarns

Tension gauge swatch

Make sure to check your tension by creating a gauge swatch before starting your knit. Cast on 21 stitches and knit 29 rows in garter stitch with 4 mm needles for a 10 x 10 cm swatch. Everyone’s tension is different, so if your tension is too tight and your gauge swatch measures too little, change to a thicker needle. If your tension is too loose and your gauge swatch is too wide, change to a thinner needle.

Good to know

The neck warmer is knitted back and forth with garter stitch. Garter stitch is when both sides are knitted. The strap is knitted separately with i-cord and then stitched on the neckwarmer. The fringes are crocheted afterwards, cut down your scraps in 7-10 cm length to crochet on your neck warmer. When the scrappy yarns have been crocheted on your neck warmer, you can adjust the “fur” a little bit by giving it a little cut. Make sure to save your cut offs, as they can be used as filling in pillows for example.

The neck warmer can be knitted in any yarn in similar thickness as Organic DK and the tension gauge isn’t necessarily something to be very focused on, the neckwarmer becomes smaller or bigger based on where you are in your tension but the end sizing on your neck warmer is very much affected on the length on your scraps. The same goes with the stitching and the stitch count, you can follow the instructions “lightly” as no details will be seen on the neck warmer after the “fur” has been crocheted on.

This should be a very fun beginners project and a great way to make use of the small cut offs and scraps from other knitting projects.
